How to Wake Up Rested When You Sleep Enough (But Still Feel Drained)

In short: if you sleep enough hours and still wake up tired, the problem may not be how long you sleep. It may be how often your sleep gets interrupted by tiny wake-ups you never remember. We call it "the loose cable."

The idea: a loose cable

Think of your night as a phone on a charger. A long night on a loose cable can leave you with less charge than a shorter night on a solid connection. Researchers call this sleep fragmentation. You don't feel it as "bad sleep," but your morning energy does.

Three connections to tighten

  1. The inside job. Caffeine keeps working for hours. Make your last cup around lunchtime. If you have an evening drink, move it earlier, or skip it on work nights.
  2. Seal the room. Light and noise are the two things that nudge your brain awake. A dark, quiet room is the ideal. If you can't get it (thin blinds, a partner on a different schedule, night shifts), a contoured sleep mask and soft foam earplugs do the job of sealing your eyes and ears.
  3. Stop checking the charger. When you wake up at night, don't check the time or your phone. Turn the clock away, put the phone across the room, stay in the dark and breathe slowly. A cooler, darker room (and a fan's steady hum) also helps.

Your assignment for tonight

Turn your clock away from your bed. One small setting, one small win. You don't have to do everything at once: pick one connection, try it for a week, then tighten the next one.

Self-check: what wakes you up most at night: light, noise, or your own brain?

If you're still exhausted after weeks of better nights, don't just push through it. If this doesn't improve, talk to a doctor.
